Meet the Artist

Jake Ulmer

An artist with over a decade of experience creating custom tattoos that blend technical precision with a passion for dark artwork. Working from a private studio in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Jake specializes in black & grey realism, horror-inspired imagery, blackwork, and large-scale custom projects.

From an early age, art served as a much needed creative outlet from the ordinary and eventually became a lifelong pursuit. Influenced by horror films, dark fantasy, creature design, and heavy metal music, Jake developed a style focused on atmosphere, contrast, and making an impression. His work often explores darker themes while emphasizing strong composition and long-lasting tattoo design.

Every tattoo is approached as a unique collaboration. Jake works closely with clients to create custom artwork tailored specifically to their ideas, anatomy, and vision. Whether it's a small meaningful piece or a full sleeve concept, his goal is to create tattoos that feel personal, intentional, and built to stand the test of time.

Today, Jake is especially interested in dark black & grey realism, horror-themed projects, blackwork, large-scale compositions, and freehand tattooing that allows artwork to flow naturally with the body. He is always excited to work with clients who appreciate originality, creativity, and custom-designed tattoos.

Q: What drew you to tattooing?

A: My journey into the world of tattooing began when I got my first tattoo at 17 years old. I had always loved art and was looking for a way to make a career of it. When I stepped into a tattoo studio for the very first time, it was such an incredible feeling to me. Seeing all of those amazing artists together in one place, listening to music, laughing, and creating artwork that would last a lifetime struck me in a way that nothing had before. I knew right away that this was where I was meant to be. After that day, I spent the next couple of years dedicated to finding a studio that would take me on as their apprentice.

Q: What inspired your artistic style?

A: I’ve always felt a deep connection with the dark and macabre. Growing up, I spent a lot of my time with my head in stories from R.L. Stine, Stephen King, and Edgar Allen Poe. Beyond the pages, I loved watching classic horror movies of the 80’s and 90’s. Film series like Friday the 13th, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Hellraiser, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Child’s Play were terrifying and captivating to me. That feeling of unease and excitement is something I try to capture in my art.

Q: What do you enjoy most about tattooing?

A: The special moments when a client first sees their design, followed by the eagerness when the stencil is on, and finally when they get to look in the mirror at the end result. When all of the time, pain, and effort has paid off and a person gets to see their new selves.

Q: What makes your tattoos unique?

A: I think what separates my tattoos from others is my commitment to creating custom, detailed artwork that truly lasts. I’ve seen countless tattoos from great artists that have faded to being barely visible within a few years, because of relying too heavily on greywashes to get soft blends and shadows. With my tattoos, I use only solid black ink to achieve my soft tones, so you know that what you see now is what will last a lifetime!

Why Custom Artwork Matters!

I believe every tattoo should be created specifically for the individual wearing it. While reference images can be helpful during the design process, my focus is always on developing original artwork tailored to each client's vision, body, and placement. Creating custom designs allows me to produce tattoos that feel more personal, flow more naturally, and stand apart from generic or overused imagery.
